Jennifer Moss

Jennifer "Jenny" Moss (January 10, 1945 - October 5, 2006) was a British actress and singer from Wigan in Lancashire. She was best known for her role as "Lucille Hewitt" on the soap opera Coronation Street, which she played from 1960 to 1974.

Jenny Moss also appeared in June Evening and on Magnolia Street for the BBC TV. At the age of 15 she joined Coronation Street in episode four as wildchild "Lucille Hewitt", a role she played until she was fired in 1974 after 13 years and over 1000 episodes.

In 1963, during the Actors Equity strike she appeared in a West End musical, alongside David Hemmings, Veronica Hurst, John Pike and Joan Newell. Moss also appeared in the beat movie, Live It Up, singing "Please Let It Happen To Me".

The following recordings were made:

  • Hobbies / Big Boys - Columbia DB 7063 June 1963
  • Please Don't Say Goodbye
  • Please Let It Happen To Me (from Live It Up)
  • When My Boy Comes Marching Home

All tracks are available on Let's Go With Joe Meek's Girls (RPM 166).

Personal life

Moss successfully battled alcoholism in the 1970s, after being sacked from Coronation Street for bad behaviour. Moss stated that she drank to numb the pain she felt after the death of her father, Reg. Moss joined Alcoholics Anonymous and was sober since 1978.

She was married five times and had three children, one of whom died in infancy and another who was born with birth defects and was adopted by another family. Moss married her fifth husband, Stephen Ramsden, in 1989, and was married to him until she died.

According to the Wigan News, Moss had been in failing health in recent years, but made a spiritual pilgrimage to India last year, where she finally came to terms with her father's death.

Death

Moss died in October 2006 at her home in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her wishes were to be buried next to her father, whose gravestone already bore Jenny Moss' name before she died. She had been estranged from her late mother, Dora.
